Philippe Charbonneau, the illegitimate son of the Duke of Kentland, finds out about his heritage from his mother, Marie, when his father is on his deathbed. Being denied his inheritance by his father's wife and his half-brother, he ends up being a hunted man. To escape the wrath of the Dutchess of Kentland, he flees to American and arrives just before the American Revolution.
I love historical fiction, and John Jakes has a way with transporting you back to the time of all the turmoil and upheaval just before the Revolution. He gives glimpses and accounts of people such as Benjamin Franklin and Samuel Adams and brings such realism to the thoughts and fears of those involved with the pending uprising. This is a well researched book that deserves more than 4 stars. I would have rated it as 5, but I felt the sex scenes were more thrown in for a draw to the female audience and to me took away from the book instead of adding to it. With that being said, it is a great read.
